Stripes: A Sustainable and Luxurious Packaging Series

A Plastic-Free Solution for Gift Packaging

Current packagings for many products, like in this case folding knives, use EVA foam as a protection material. Even though EVA foam is very suitable, its recycling rate is very low. Often, the foam is glued onto other materials in a packaging and therefore hard to separate for recycling. Rare-earth magnets are used in many packagings as well. The extraction of rare earth elements for these magnets is notoriously linked to environmental pollution. There had to be a way to improve this.

Designer Ridzert Ingenegeren has revolutionized the packaging industry with his innovative design, "Stripes." This sustainable and luxurious packaging series aims to address the environmental concerns associated with traditional packaging materials while providing a delightful unboxing experience.

Instead of using EVA foam, Ingenegeren opted for a bagasse paper tray to protect and present the contents. Bagasse is a by-product of the sugarcane industry and can be recycled like regular paper. By utilizing this eco-friendly material, Ingenegeren eliminates the need for hard-to-recycle foam.

In addition, Ingenegeren eliminated the use of rare-earth magnets commonly found in packaging. Instead, he created a clever drawer box that closes with a paper sleeve. This design not only eliminates the environmental impact of magnet extraction but also adds an element of surprise and elegance to the unboxing experience.

The entire packaging series, including the cardboard parts of the box, the sleeve, and the brochure, is made from recycled cardboard. This commitment to sustainability ensures that the packagings can be disposed of in paper recycling bins, further reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.

The manufacturing process for the Stripes packaging series is equally sustainable. The bagasse paper tray is made from bagasse pulp and dry pressed into its final shape. The main drawer box is made of recycled cardboard, covered with decorative paper. The sleeve and brochure are also made from recycled paper. By keeping the entire packaging plastic-free, Ingenegeren has achieved his goal of creating a truly sustainable packaging solution.

Each box in the Stripes series features a stylish stripe pattern, which is repeated on the sleeve that closes the box. This design choice adds a touch of sophistication and visual appeal to the packaging, making it suitable for gift-giving occasions.

The Stripes packaging series was developed in response to market research conducted by the brand. Folding knives from the brand were often purchased as gifts, prompting the need for a luxurious and sustainable packaging option. The brand also recognized the importance of aligning its packaging with its core values of sustainability and reconnecting humans with nature.

Since its launch in April 2019, the Stripes packaging series has garnered praise for its innovative design and commitment to sustainability. It has been well-received in Germany, with subsequent launches in Italy, Spain, and France. The design has also been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects, and Green Design category.

With Stripes, Ridzert Ingenegeren has proven that sustainable packaging can be both luxurious and environmentally friendly. By utilizing recycled materials and eliminating hard-to-recycle components, Ingenegeren has set a new standard for the packaging industry. The Stripes packaging series not only protects and presents its contents but also contributes to a better world.
